Rhode Island, despite being the smallest U.S. state, is one of the most densely populated, with its current population hovering around 1.1 million. Historically, the state experienced significant growth, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by a booming industrial sector that attracted waves of European immigrants seeking textile and manufacturing jobs. This rapid expansion continued until the mid-20th century, after which deindustrialization led to slower growth, and even periods of stagnation or slight decline. Currently, Rhode Island's population trend is characterized by modest growth, an increasingly aging demographic, and continued out-migration of younger residents, somewhat offset by new arrivals from other states and international immigration, contributing to its growing ethnic diversity.
