New York State, one of the most populous in the United States, currently hovers around 19.5 million residents, though recent trends show a slight decline. Historically, the state experienced significant and sustained growth, particularly during the 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by massive waves of international immigration through Ellis Island and rapid industrialization that concentrated people in urban centers like New York City. However, growth began to slow and even reverse in the latter half of the 20th century, as manufacturing declined and a pronounced domestic out-migration emerged, especially from upstate regions, as residents sought opportunities or lower costs of living elsewhere. This trend of net domestic out-migration continues today, often offsetting gains from international immigration, which remains a vital demographic component, particularly for the diverse population of New York City and its surrounding metropolitan area, while many upstate communities continue to face challenges from aging populations and outward migration.
