Idaho's population, though still relatively modest among U.S. states, has experienced significant and sustained growth, particularly in recent decades. Historically, the state saw gradual increases driven by resource extraction, agriculture, and homesteading, but its population remained sparse for much of the 20th century. More recently, however, Idaho has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in the nation, with its population surging past 1.9 million. This rapid expansion is primarily fueled by net in-migration from other states, with residents attracted by its comparatively lower cost of living, ample outdoor recreation opportunities, and the increasing flexibility of remote work, leading to demographic shifts and pressures on infrastructure, especially in its urban and suburban areas.
