The Northeast Region of the United States has long been a demographic powerhouse, historically serving as the nation's most densely populated and urbanized corridor. Its population surged throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, fueled by waves of European immigration and rapid industrial expansion, establishing major metropolitan centers like New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. However, the latter half of the 20th century saw a shift, with deindustrialization, suburbanization, and some out-migration to the Sun Belt leading to slower growth and even population decline in certain areas, particularly in parts of the "Rust Belt." Currently, the region is characterized by modest, and in some areas stagnant or declining, population growth compared to the South and West, often balanced by continued international immigration that offsets domestic out-migration and an aging native-born population, maintaining its status as a diverse and economically vital, albeit slow-growing, segment of the American landscape.
